Northumberland & The Scottish Borders (Part 1)

This collection of photographs have been taken from my favourite area in the UK which is Northumberland and it's surrounding area. Northumberland is very remote and steeped in history, this is why it is a great place to visit. More parts will follow for Northumberland as it is a very picturesque area and I hope these are inspiring for you.

Boat Sheds
This image was taken on Holy Island which can be visited by crossing the causeway to the small Island. The image shows an upside down boat which has been turned into a shed and there is quite a few along the marina edge. This image captures the glimpses of the past as it looks across to Lindisfarne Castle in the background.

Longstone Lighthouse
Longstone Lighthouse
The glory of Longstone lighthouse can be seen in these images. The lighthouse is famous for the heroine called Grace Darling as this was where she saw the shipwreck and saved the sailors lives. The lighthouse is a stunning feature of the Northumberland coastline and can be seen from Seahouses harbour where you can pick up a boat trip around the Farne Islands, which is home to thousands of sea birds.
Morning Bamburgh
Image of one of the most photographed castles in Britain is Bamburgh Castle as it has a prominent appearance on the sandy beaches and coastline. This image captures the castle from long distance and shows off how dominent it is from the beach. This was taken whilst having an early morning walk along the quiet beach and the lighting really captured the glory.

Smailholm Tower
A really strong moody image of Smailholm Tower which can be found in the remote areas of the Scottish Borders. The tower stands on a rocky crag which gives it the eerie feeling when you visit this tower. The overcast day with a few breaks in the clouds gave good moody lighting to the tower and converting the image to Black & White really makes the image impacting. Also how the wide angle lens makes the tower lean which gives a more overpowering feel.

St Abbs Head
One of the most beautiful places and quaint harbours near the Scottish Borders. St Abbs Head protrudes out from the mainland is great to stand a top and have the sea breeze pass you by. Also from the top you can look back at the small village of St Abbs and really realise the size of it. The colours and layers of the rocks really gives great attributes to the image and is really a great place to see.

Lake District Black & White Photography

When I visited the Lake District for the weekend in February 2011 the weather wasn't that great. Well when is it when it's one of the wettest places in Britain. I had gone in mind of getting some nice shots of the peaks and lakes but I was greeted by misty and dull weather. At first thinking it was a waste of a weekend away but then once I started taking pictures of Lake Windermere with the mist, things started to look up.

The mist created a great non-disruptive background to capture reflections of the boats and also reflections of other things around the lakes. So my advice is don't be disheartened by the British weather because you can take great images in any weather you just need a different approach and that approach is how you see things.

Please enjoy the images and please comment. Any advice is good advice.

Coloured Rain

These are a few images I took last weekend whilst out walking. They were taken along the Macclesfield Canal just after a quick shower near Timbersbrook. I captured these because they really show the moment and magic after a rain shower with a colourful rainbow which really makes these images more magical and pleasing to view.
